Clicker Dog Training

Ever wonder what was involved with clicker dog training? Well now is your chance to find out. If you've read some of our other training articles, you'll know that a lot of the dog training tips discussed involve using command words with your dog such as 'heel' and 'sit'. Clicker dog training is similar but this time we use a clicker to produce a certain number of clicks to relate to the command or action required.

When this type of training works, it works well. The clicks are not easily confused by the dog whereas a voice command from one person may seem different to the dog if given by someone else. However, for the most part, clicker dog training is not easy and many dogs find it very difficult to learn. If there is a particular reason you wish to use the clicker method then OK, but otherwise we would suggest proceeding with normal voice command methods.

Clicker dog training works in the same way regular voice training does. For example if you want your dog to sit then you press down lightly on the lower part of his back and use the word sit. Instead of the voice command 'sit' you may give the dog two clicks of the clicker. The dog must be rewarded after performing the task. You then continue the process until the dog automatically sits when he hears two clicks from the clicker.

As with any dog training it is not good to tire the dog out so you should carry out the training for 10-15 minutes at a time, several times a day rather than an hour long session.
